South Central Regional Tuba/Euphonium Conference

The ITEA South Central Regional Tuba/Euphonium Conference will feature performers from the area: professionals, teachers, college and high school students. Our goal is for everyone attending the conference to participate in the conference. The list of scheduled artists includes:

Late registration, with an accompanying fee increase, begins March 2.

Students interested in entering one of the four competitions should be reminded that the entry deadline is March 1.

That's quite a nice lineup. How will they all fit into two days? I'd hate to have to choose one over another.

Hey Doc,
You won't really have to choose. As the schedule is right now, most of the pros will be sharing recital spots. It'll be the same with the college ensembles. This way you get a "peppering" of literature and styles.

Nothing like a little pepper to go with some great Mexican food, huh?

PARKING
Prior to 5:45 PM on Friday, March 30, free parking will be limited. However, parking is available in the San Jacinto Parking Garage: http://www.utexas.edu/parking/parking/garages/pg1.html for a maximum fee of $8 per day. This fee is payable by credit card (Visa, MasterCard, or Discover).

After 5:45 PM on Friday, March 30, and all day on Saturday, March 31, any parking spot on campus that is not marked “AT ALL TIMESâ€

As we have Steve Dumain and the National Symphony Orchestra here in Kansas today, me and a terrific student quartet will be driving all night (12 hrs) to be at the conference tomorrow!

Why drive all night to hear tuba and euphoniums you ask? To hear Jamie Lipton is probably reason enough, However, there is more...

There are many unconfirmed rumors around. Wait and see. I'm sure when it's official, ITEA will announce it in a journal.

Maybe. However the ITEC in St. Joseph, MO (Great Plains....) missed publication.

Re the conference (and at the risk of inadvertently forgetting to mention some other great events and thereby offending someone . . .)

Highlights for me personally included

• Kevin Wass' clinic on "What Collaborative Pianists Can Teach Us About Musicianship"

• Charles Villarrubia's clinic on "Interpretation Through Song"

• Dr. Bowman's recital, featuring a wide array of vocal rep (all played seamlessly and with a tremendous amount of expression)

All the above, in my opinion, continued the underlying theme of this past summer's ITEC -- namely, going beyond what's on the page and striving to become artists w/our instruments.

Hats off to Steve Bryant and crew for a very well-organized, well-balanced conference.

Let me also add my thanks and congrats to Steve and all others who helped him! It was an excellently run conference!

And fun too!

I wanted all to know about the piece I played... The Sonata for Tuba and Piano by David Powell. I think it is among the best pieces ever written for the tuba and deserves to be known and played. It is available from Tuba Press. Please check it out.

FYI David was a friend of mine at Curtis and wrote this piece for me in 1981 and I premiered it at Curtis in April (I think) of that year. He entered Curtis after having been the bass player with Dave Brubeck (!!!) for a decade! He studied with David Loeb while we were at Curtis.
