I have often thought that some movie soundtracks, and the soundtracks of some video games, qualify as modern day classical music. In which case, the state of classical music might not be quite so bad as one often reads. It's true that one is unlikely to get a soundtrack in genuine sonata-allegro form, and just about all soundtracks would be considered programmatic, but I don't think that should disqualify it.

The soundtrack to Darkman is also by Danny Elfman.

I rather like the soundtrack for The Rocketeer.

I love the performance of Begin the Beguine which is Big Band style. But it's just as good as any Schubert lieder. I have never been able to find a complete album by the singer.

If you like jazz band style, the soundtrack to Najica Blitz Tactics is among the best I've heard. It's not the easiest CD to find. The band calls themselves the Diligent Circle of Ekoda. This is the one I have at full price which is against my religion to pay.

I remember going to the movie theater once, when I lived in Texas (of many times) and we got there early. They were playing recordings on the theater sound system. They played the theme for The Simpsons and that was great! It didn't sound like the tinny sound I get from the TV. That theme is by Danny Elfman, arranged by Alf Clausen--and the tuba player is Jim Self. Maybe when I get back to the States I should invest in a good stereo system and run the TV through it!
