Kelly Mouthpieces PT-50 being developed - want one?

Post by Leland »

***UPDATE Oct 29***

This weekend, Jim informed me that it should be a couple of months before production is fully underway.

He's been pleasantly surprised by the interest shown here, and has said to contact him for purchase. He'll put together a list of buyers, and will contact everyone once it's ready.

  Email Jim Kelly at mail@mouthpiecewizard.com

Original post below (for reference, I guess) :
------------------------

I talked with Jim Kelly at DCI Finals in Denver this weekend about making a duplicate of a PT-50. For a single copy, to cover tooling for the new mold, would cost $120.

HOWEVER...

We discussed it further, and he thinks it would be no problem to lower the price near the regular Kelly lineup if there were more people interested.

So, I left my PT-50 with him, and he's going to scan it into the computer and take measurements.

For this thread, in the spirit of a "group buy" (the kind you might see at car enthusiast forums for aftermarket parts), is anyone here interested? The more people that want one, the cheaper it'll be.

BTW, he's also working on a color that would more closely resemble silverplate. He says that it'll probably be impossible to properly duplicate the reflective qualities, but he should be able to come up with something that's the same shade and would look "normal" from ten feet away.

I also asked him about copyright, and he said there's no problem. Because of the vast material differences between Lexan and silverplated brass, they won't be conflicting designs.

Remember that he's got plastic versions of the Bach 18 and 25 sizes, too.

Hmmm, I didn't think about that aspect. I don't expect a problem myself, though.

Maybe Jim will have to rename it a "Kelly-Fifty". ;)

Yup.

Anyway, back to the point of my post --

Is anyone else interested?

How long does it take for the intellectual property laws to expire?

A PT-50 has been around a long time, first as a Bruno Tilz M20, then a PT-20, and now as a PT-50. I'm not sure my idea of "a long time" is long enough for the law tho'.

Thank you for the history. I had not known what the PT 50 was based on but it seems very close to a 1927 Holton #50 I have which is where I had always felt it might possibly have got its' name.

I would be interested in going in on a group purchase. I play on a PT 88. I believe the PT 50 is the V-shaped equivalent (or at least close to it). You can count me in.....IF.... the price goes below $50 each. If we get enough of us to order, it shouldn't be out of reach.

You got it -- that's the plan. There are one or two other players that I work with that might be interested, too.

the cavalry has arrived. there is a very, very good chance that i'd be placing an order for 12 of them if they are made. the entire sousa line at App state is going to buy kelly mouthpieces and i think a pt50 copy would be a great choice. i just have to get in touch with the section leader and get the numbers finalized. if not 12 then you can at least put me down for 2 or 3

Cool -- keep us updated. I'd think that even 2 or 3 would be good.

Sounds like he would make his money back

Post by ThomasP »

I think he would make his money back if he made a PT-50 equivalent. I would probably buy one if it was the same prices as the ones are now. I am already thinking about getting a Kellyburg, but would like one larger.

If the PT-50 is bigger than my Wick 1L, I'd buy one too. Anybody know the relative size? :?:

From Perantucci's specs page, and the specs page at Mouthpiece Express for the Wick 1L:

PT50 DW1L
Cup ID (mm): 33.0 32.5
Rim Width: 7.5 7.48
Throat: 8.3 8.43

Neither company says much about the cup volume, but these are the numbers they give.

Thanks Leland. Is there a list somewhere with these specs? I used to have one for Schilke, but my last trip to their website didn't find it again.

I started through Google, and ended up at Perantucci's own site, plus Mouthpiece Express (which, of course, is at www.mouthpieceexpress.com .. lol ;) ). Mouthpiece Express has a pretty big database of dimensions with seemingly everybody but Perantucci and Monette being listed.

If there's a comprehensive mouthpiece database somewhere, I haven't found it yet.

So, besides those who posted here, I've had one private message from a studio teacher, and two others at work said that they'd get one, too.

My PT-50 will be shipped back to me tomorrow. I think Jim is pretty excited about the interest shown here!

How would the new Kelly PT-50 compare in shape and dimensions to their existing Kellyberg? The PT 50 isn't much different from my Wick 1L. I have a nameless Helleberg from TE that feels almost the same as the Wick.
Still trying to get an excuse to buy one

Doug Elliot's comparison chart lists both the Conn helleberg and PT50 with a 33 mm inside diameter. However, the PT50's inner lip is more rounded, and the cup is much larger in volume than the Conn, giving it a definitely bigger feel.

I expect the Kellyberg and yet-to-be-named PT50-esque version to be similarly different.
