MP3 File Premiere of a new "old" tuba solo

Hello everyone, many people asked me to post a recording of this piece once it was premiered. Attached is a link that should hopefully work.

This is a live recording of the concert Sunday May 20th, in Ferndale Maryland.

This is not a studio built perfect recording. There are a couple of chips and a spot where I missed a breath and was dying for air. For a live recording, and after playing the first half of the concert, to just step out and play, I am very happy with the results and hang my head very proudly.

I offer this recording in hopes of generating some interest in this work and to let you know that I am working to make this new version available for you to play.

Feel free to make any comments you wish, but I don't need a note for a note by note critique. I am well aware of my performance errors and have already given myself a flogging.

For informational purposes, I am playing a HB-2 with a G&W Alan Baer CC MMVI Stainless Steel mouthpiece. As for recording equipment, don't know anything about the set up. It was just one microphone dumped straight to disc.

Hello all,

I will be the soloist with the U.S. Navy Band May 20th concert in Ferndale Maryland. It will be a premiere of a new "old" tuba solo.

The piece I am playing has been lost and is not well know. This performance is a culmination of many months of searching for the parts and re-writing the solo part.

Down in the Deep Cellar, by F. Kroepsch, solo edition by J.K. Diamond


It is a Grand Fantasia, Theme and Var. style, very diatonic, covers 3 octaves. It is very tuneful, fun, and the band parts are very easy. A great piece to do with high school or community band.

If you are in the area and have nothing better to do with your afternoon, feel free to come out. At this time I do not know the rest of the program.

It is a free concert and no tickets required, just show up.

Couldn't find it? I sold the original arrangement along The Elephant and The Fly and Solo Pomposo to someone on this board 6-7 years ago. It was published by Carl Fischer and was one of the 'catch-all" arrangements for Trombone, Baritone, Bass in Bb, and Tuba. Hope it goes well.

It was a long road to find all the parts, there are many versions floating around and it is unclear which is the "actual" original solo part.

Hi Bob,

Thanks for the question, I should have posted that information.

Top note is Eb above middle C, and the lowest note is the Eb pedal. (is that eb1 to EEb - I forget the exact notation).

It goes from the Eb above the staff to the one octave below the Eb at the bottom of the staff. A 3 octave range covering 4 different Eb's.

I was originally going to do it on my Eb, but I thought the bigger horn added to the humor factor, kind of the bull in a china shop style.

Very good! Cool piece...from the sounds of it. Seems like fun. I think anyone on here would have to practice it a lot (like you) to get it that good...
