need lyrical solo w/ band ideas

Post by Drbuzzz »

Sorry if this is a redundant post, but I got tired of searching.

I need a solo tuba piece with band that is:

1) sweet and cantabile (i.e. sappy)
2) not too difficult for the band
3) not very long

I plan on playing something short and lyrical prior (Pryor  ) to Blue Bells of Scotland. Let the ideas fly my way!

how bout a touch of tuba... I think there is a piece by Robert W. Smith called after a gentle rain which is the very nice slow movement of his "Willson suite".

Jan Krzywicki's Ballade has been transcribed for band. I believe Sumner Erickson did it in Texas recently. It's a gorgeous piece that is underplayed, in my opinion.

If 2nd Movements are able to be done, what about the 2nd mov't from Rolf Wilhelm Concertino

Also, what about the Chance Yorkshire Ballad that Pat Sheridan recorded on Storyteller.

"Gabriels Oboe"
from The Mission.

Gorgeous piece. I think Oystein Badsvik has an arrangement.

Suite for Louise?

Post by bill »

Try looking for "Suite for Louise" publihed by Kendor, as I remember. I've had young players do this; easy band part and nicely melodic for tuba.
Always make a good sound; audiences will forget if you miss a note but making a good sound will get you the next job.

I'll second the Willson suite by Smith, pretty darn sappy, but pretty none the less. Another one you may look into would be the Wilhelm Concertino's Second mvmt.

I second Bill's suggestion. Suite for Louise was my first solo piece! It was some time ago but I remember it being very melodic and down-right pretty. If my highschool band could handle the tune your band should have no problems.
