Eurovision

Post by Chuck(G) »

Okay, the finals of the Eurovision song contest are tomorrow and best estimates are that somewhere over 100 million people are going to watch it (nothing better to do, I suppose).

So what do you think of the acts?

Latvia is pretty strange (a bunch of guys in top hats singing off-key and mostly in unison).

...and Ukraine just defies description...

and they say that Chernobyl is perfectly safe outside the buffer zone...
Instead of talking to your plants, if you yelled at them would they still grow, but only to be troubled and insecure?

German people singing a song about a Russian city and trying to sound like Abba. Ooookay...

I note that Sweden is still trotting out Abba lookalikes in this year's EV.

Out of the semifinalists, the one I liked best was the Irish entry. Nicely understated production wtihout the ensless guitar/synth/percussion backing. The female lead singer could be better, but it wasn't bad.

The results are in; the winner for 2007 is...Serbia with 268 points. Ukraine came in second with 235--and my favorite, Ireland, came in dead last--with 5.

Shows what I know about pop music. :(

The curious thing is that Eastern Europe pretty much swept the top spots, with Western Europe (UK, France, Germany, Spain and Sweden, taking the bottom spots in the voting along with Ireland.

...and with Ukraine coming in #2, it just shows that it's hard to beat urban cross-dressing disco techno polka... :?

Uh, yeah. And I grew up in an age where we thought the New York Dolls were "out there," and Gary Newman was as minimalist as it got.
