An avatar is the pic that appears under your name. Technically, the limit is 80x80 pixels, but some of us, myself included, have much bigger ones, as you can see.
It's kind of like your photo ID for the board, but you can change it so really it's just a fashion statement. I went from Dan Quayle to Spiro Agnew to Dr. Strangelove, and guys like Joe (bloke) change their's daily.
