Orchestral Tuba recordings

Post by pulseczar »

Inspired by the 'Deck Special' thread, what recordings do you have that have exceptional tuba playing?

I'm not talking about excerpts or solos, but overall recordings with great orchestral tuba playing.

Off the top of my head.

Gene Pokorny-Proko 5/ St Louis and CSO
Planets/ CSO,

John Fletcher- LSO/ Proko 5 and Rach Sym 2

Floyd Cooley- SFS/Hindemith(all of them) Nielsen Sym(all of them)

Walter Hilgers- NDR/Bruckner Sym's

John Jenkins- Philharmonia/Walton 1 and Prokofiev

Arnold Jacobs- Franck in D minor/CSO, Neilsen 4

Dave Kirk- Proko 5/HSO

David Fedderly- Barber Essays, Berlioz/BSO

Chester Schmitz(sp?) Mahler Sym's, Respighi, Franck/ BSO

Jens Bjorn Larsen- Nielsen Sym's/DRSO

Bob Tucci- Ring Cycle/Vienna

Not to mention NYP/Alan Baer broadcast great rep weekly from their website. Chicago has just started broadcasting again as well. I believe Boston has stopped their broadcasting sadly.

I know I have more but thats it for now. We certainly have fantastic resources to learn from.

I have almost all of the cd's on Pete's list and would agree with his recommendations. I would also add:

Mehta/LA Phil - Mahler 5 (Roger Bobo)
Previn/LA Phil - Alexander Nevsky (Norm Pearson)
Mehta/NY Phil - Mahler 5 (Warren Deck)
Mehta/NY Phil - Sibelius 2/Finlandia (Warren Deck)
MTT/SFSO - Romeo and Juliet (Floyd Cooley)
Gergiev/LSO - Complete Prokofiev symphonies (Patrick Harrild)
Slatkin/SLSO - Mahler 2 (David Fedderly)
Barenboim/CSO - Symphonie Fantastique (Pokorny/Mendoker)
Boulez/CSO - Mahler 9 (Gene Pokorny)

This is just a quick list off the top of my head that doesn't include recordings previously listed.

Don't discount the older Klemperer/Philharmonia/New Philharmonia recordings, particularly the Wager set and Bruckner 4 and 6. I have always contended they had some of the best tuba playing and the best recorded tuba playing ever done. Don't know the player, but he is REALLY good.

I know where you can find myriad recordings.

Orchestral Recordings for Low Brass
by Gerald Sloan

This book is available from Encore Music Publishers for $20 + S/H. It is a "must have" resource for every serious low brass player who is interested in highly recommended recordings. Gerald Sloan is a trombone professor at the University of Arkansas. He took a sabbatical, spending much time in research at the Library of Congress. Many professional low brass musicians submitted their favorite recordings to be included in Mr. Sloan's book. Here is a link to Encore's site: http://www.encoremupub.com/Text/texts.htm

Mr. Sloan is an outstanding teacher. I was fortunate to be under his instruction in the early 90's.

I'm curious--what qualifies an orchestral work for inclusion in this category? For example, there's a great tuba part in the Torch "London Transport Suite", but I've never seen a mention anywhere of it.

Look for the DGG recording of William Steinberg conducting Boston in a terrific reading of the Hindemith Sinfonie 'Mathis der Maler' from the early 70's. Chester was absolutely brilliant in that recording.

Exception: in the 3rd movement, he miscounted one of those big tutti offbeat quarters, and honked a magnificent (misplaced) one note solo. Somehow the engineer missed it. But for that, the complete recording is, to my ear, perfect. And why I love it so.

here's a few of my favorites

Symphonie Fantasique -CSO/Solti (Jacobs)
Alexander Nevsky - LSO/Abbado (Fletcher)
Prokofiev Romeo and Juliet - SFSO/Blomstedt (Cooley)
Symphonic Metamorphosis - SFSO/Blomstedt (Cooley)
Shostakovich 10 - LSO/Abbado (Fletcher)
Tchaikovsky 4 - CSO/Barenboim (Pokorny)

There's plenty more, but several of the good ones have already been said. I thought that I'd just give a few more suggestions.
