travel tips on Copenhagen

Greetings all,

With my upcoming wedding just around the corner (June 30), and the honeymoon starting the next day, I thought I would put this to the Tubenet Freak Jury..... Any suggestions while visiting Copenhagen? We are also contemplating heading into Sweden for a day or two... Any stops we shouldn't miss (aside from the Little Mermaid and Tivoli)?

Any input will be appreciated....

Since you'll be there in July, you might want to check out the Copenhagen Jazz Festival. The Symphony and Opera will have closed for the summer by then, but I'm sure that there will nevertheless be lots of classical concerts (choral/chamber music).

I suggest sailing on the canals, that is a very good way to get a fast view of the city. I always enjoy walking about the old city, around the seas and along the shore from Nyhavn to the old fortress, passing the little mermaid on the way. If the weather is good, I like to imitate the locals and sit on a blanket and drink beer in Kongens have or some of the other gardens. Don't forget to have at least one typical Danish lunch of open faced sandwiches (smørrebrød) and beer, complete with a schnapps of Akvavit.

Many people like to visit the freetown Christiania, although it isn't quite what it used to be. It is still an interesting promenade.

If you are interested in architecture, there are a number of churches and palaces to take a look at. While at the royal palace you might see the changing of the guards, which takes place every day at noon. Chances are that the queen won't be at home in July, in which case the band doesn't play.

Take a tour over to Roskilde to see the old church and the recovery of the Viking long boats.

There's lots to see within walking distance of the city center, including Nyhavn (for a late night--still daylight, of course--beer and people-watch on the patio), and a bunch of small but interested sights whose names now escape me. Copenhagen has many who speak excellent English, so you won't have any trouble getting local recommendations.

I didn't take a boat to Sweden, so I can't comment on that.

There are several churches within walking distance of the city center that provide interested architecture and tours, too. One has a spiral staircase on the OUTSIDE of the steeple--right up to the point where the stairs are too narrow to walk on. Yes, they let you climb the stairs. They'll even let you fall off of them.

I found Copenhagen to be clean, happy, friendly, and uninhibited. The summer solstice is THE time to be there--daylight lasts until 11 PM and everyone seems to be in a good mood.

I live in Denmark. And depending on what you want to do, I suggest you go to the jazz festival. There will be some pretty amazing tuba players performing.

And if it is nice and sunny, go to "Nyhavn" and hang out. Legoland is about 4 hours away in car. Another company has bought legoland, and it is not the same anymore (they fired me and my band!!)
But go to tivoli. Maybe in the afternoon. Its pretty with all the lights, and there is usually a show. They have a resident bigband, and last time I went there, a small classical ensemble. The bigband is directed by the guy that filled in for count basie when he died.

I was in Copenhagen 30 years ago as part of a 3 week concert tour. The mermaid had not lost her head yet. I had one of the most enjoyable days of the tour when I rented a bicycle and rode all around the city. I had a map and whenever I got lost, there
were lots of people more than willing to show me the way.

There's a saying that Danes were born on bikes and Norwegians on skis. I believe it. It seemed to me the whole city was on bikes.
Even at my advanced aged, I wouldn't hesitate to go back and tour the city on a bike. What fun! You will enjoy the city
tremendously. Yes go to Tivoli. We performed there at night and the lights and atmosphere is lots of fun, especially with a bride and lots of Danish beer.
