New Warburton mpc
Warburton Music has introduced a new "J" mouthpiece which is supposed to be like their "Arnold Jacobs" mpc they sell, but with a more rounded inner rim.

Has anyone had a chance to try this out?

Greetings from Sydney!
The "J" series is not a Jacobs mouthpiece, it might be based on the former Jacobs model but they have modified it - how can you put any person's name on a mouthpiece they never saw? Warburton has been told not to use the Jacobs name anymore. In the meantime, I have dropped the Jacobs mouthpiece.

I think Terry's been pretty careful here. He merely mentions that Mr. Jacobs played on a Helleberg mouthpiece for years. Is this off-limits? As far as I can tell, he doesn't even claim that this mouthpiece is anything other than an interpretation of the classic Helleberg design.
To be fair, my mouthpiece says "Warburton C.G.", even though it was made when Terry was producing the AJ Hellebergs.

This mouthpiece is derived from the time Terry spent copying a few mouthpieces for the Canadian Brass.
I'm pretty sure that he copied one of Arnold Jacob's hellebergs as well as Chuck Dallenbach's. Figuring that Terry made those Arnold Jacob's mouthpieces for Getzen for a while and sold a good number of them, he probably felt the need to use the design in a new Warburton Labeled mouthpiece (instead of making mouthpieces for other folks like Dillon's).
Terry doesn't pute the name Arnold Jacobs on those mouthpieces now, although I think mine might say "Jake" on it. I doubt that putting Jake on it would constitute any legal implications, but he did remove all references other thatn the "J".
Anywho, these are nice pieces and are worth a look if you like a Helleberg cup with a comfortable rim. The price is more than his traditional mouthpieces, but not out of line.
Terry is a good craftsman and sells a good product. Give him a call and I'm sure he'll be more than happy to discuss any of his designs with you.

Indeed it was--but Terry managed to make a nice fit of the two parts. I have a TE Rose, but it's a black hole of a mouthpiece--big and deep and I wanted something smaller with the same rim.Matthew Gilchrest wrote:Was this the TE Rose that he was making for a while?
That was a pretty BIG mouthpiece.

It seems to me that TW's saying "Arnold Jacobs used a Helleberg mouthpiece" is a statement of fact, like "J. Edgar Hoover dressed up in women's clothing". Just the facts, ma'am (or sir). Not any explicit endorsement of a product.

G'day from .... Chicago????
Here's the exact quote from Warburton: "The state-of-the-art in tuba mouthpiece design was achieved in the first part of the 20th century bearing the name of the then-famous tuba player, Helleberg. Mr. Helleberg's mouthpiece design is as legendary as the man himself. For sixty years this was Arnold Jacob’s main mouthpiece."
I like the spelling of Jacobs but this is really borderline - I have an obligation to the Jacobs family to report incidents like this. Terry is a good guy, his sales manager is questionable. I hope he will volantarily withdraw the statement so I don't have to tell the family.

OK, there's a point.
Let's face it, every single one of us uses some variation of a Helleberg. Why did Warburton pick on one single player? Why call it a "J" series implying Jacaos? They are really borderline. Now, if they said Hellebergs are used by all tuba players with a list of names (athorized by the player or their family), there is no problem but Warburton's guy is implying that Jacobs used this mouthpiece when he never saw it - it is a variation on the old Jacobs MP. What would happen if someone came out with a pair of shoes and said "these are like ones worn by Michael Jordan." Crap would fly.
The Jacobs family has a beef here.
