Doc Jim Fox, who formerly had the online store Military Musician, runs a brass band internet radio station. He can tell what are good recordings.

The brass band website, 4barsrest, also has extensive reviews of brass band CD's.

Amazon and all the big name internet stores should have them, or can order them for you. If not, you can usually contact the band website and order direct, as has been the case with Black Dyke for years.

One of my all-time favorite Brass Band CDs is, "Brass from the Masters (Vol 2)", by the Grimethorpe Colliery Brass Band. Here's a link for one at Amazon where you can listen to sample tracks. Track 2 is "Fantasy for Brass" by Malcom Arnold -- an awesome contest piece. There are other links on the 'sample' page to get this CD cheaper if interested.

On that same page are some other brass band CDs. "Melody Shop" -- also by Grimethorpe is excellent.

Don't forget the BBBC (Brass Band of Battle Creek) recordings. I like their lates CD, "Live III".

The best 2 IMO are www.worldofbrass.com for more recent mainstream stuff, but also www.ukcd.net for recordings from every British and foreign brass (and military) band around.

Sorry to resurrect a dead thread, but I thought others would like to know what I stumbled upon this week.

Amazon's MP3 Downloads has added 20+ brass band recordings in recent months - most of them are Black Dyke, but even then there are a couple of recordings that were no longer available new. One of my favorites available there is the "Complete Champions" recording from about 1985. It's a fantastic album that I was only able to find used up until now.

For those unfamiliar with Amazon's service, it's a "buy the mp3's and do what you want" situation. Copy them to your IPod, Zune, laptop, backup CD, or whatever; no digital rights management that I know of.

Prices range from 6-10 bucks. I prefer to have actual CD's for my classical library, but with the exchange rate as it is this is a great option for recordings that aren't widely available in the U.S.

And I need to update as well. Doc Fox' brass band internet radio station and his website store, militarymusician.com , are going strong. Please patronize them if you can. Doc Fox is a gentleman and a pleasure to do business with.

Does anyone know where one can obtain a recording of the piece "Crusade" by Rieks van der Velde.

It was last year's test piece for the NABBA Challenge category.
