Blockbuster Sides With Blu-ray In Major Setback For HD DVD

The high-definition video disc format war could be nearing an end. Sony's Blu-ray Disc scored another victory over Toshiba and NEC's rival format HD DVD Monday when Blockbuster announced plans to carry only Blu-ray Disc movies in 1,450 of its movie-rental stores.
Blockbuster said its decision to back Blu-ray Disc in its nationwide rollout was based on the results of rental activity at 250 stores offering both formats. In a pilot program over the last several months, more than 70% of high-def movie rentals at those stores were Blu-ray Disc.
