In Nashville, Dickerson Road (aka Dickerson Pike) has been notorious for prostitution, drugs, and petty crime. It was even a running gag on morning radio stations. The city is proposing to rename the road "Skyline Boulevard" to solve the problem.

8 Mile isn't anywhere near the worst 'round Deeetroit. Cass Corridor, most of SW, 6 and Woodward, all worse...

Don't know. I picked one area that people would easily relate to. Cass Corridor is unheard of in my parts, 8 Mile brings up instantaneous stereotypes and thoughts.

It very well may not be the worst, but it is the one with the biggest rep outside of Detroit. Due mostly in part to Eminem and other rap influences.

Yup, same thing here in Baltimore, and probably many other cities. Anyone have this kind of "dirt" on Denver? I could be moving there next year...

I think you'll find it hard to locate any place in Denver that is as bad as the typical lower-middle-class neighborhood inside the Baltimore beltway.

Eastern cities have had a big head start on decay, but some are still outpacing the comptition.

In Southern California, unincorporated communities sometimes band together to make one huge municipality.

Rancho Cucamonga The towns of Alta Loma, Cucamonga, and Etiwanda banded together to form the second largest city in San Bernardino County in 1976. Everyone knows Cucamonga. I used to teach school at Cucamonga Junior High. For the people who live in Rancho Cucamonga (who refer to the city as simply Rancho), the neighborhoods of Alta Loma and Etiwanda still exist. But Cucamonga is simply called "the center of town." Oh, and if you remember Mel Blanc, on the Jack Benny Program, calling out, "Train leaving on Track Five for Anaheim, Azusa, and Cucamonga," the commuter train station is on Jack Benny Drive. It's across the street from a professional baseball stadium called the EpiCenter, where the Rancho Cucamonga 'Quakes (of the California League), play their home games.

Moreno Valley In 1984, the towns of Edgemont, Moreno, and Sunnymead became the city of Moreno Valley. Moreno was named for Frank Brown, who formed the first private water company in the area back in 1883. Moreno means brown in Spanish. The city also includes what used to be the large Army post, Camp Haan, and March Air Force Base (formerly March Field, now March Air Reserve Base). For many years, Moreno Valley meant either Moreno Valley High School in Sunnymead or the Moreno Valley Unified School District. The communities banded together in the early 1980s to combat the growing crime problems as gangs, who were being kicked out of Los Angeles, were moving into the Riverside area--but Riverside wouldn't let them stay. Crime is down from what it was many years ago, but the stigma still exists. As soon as Moreno Valley incorporated in 1984, it was the second largest city in Riverside County. Despite the stigma, most people who live there think it's a nice place. And the former names of Edgemont, Sunnymead, and Moreno are not used at all anymore--well Sunnymead Boulevard is still a major thoroughfare.

A new city will soon be created in Riverside County: Menifee Valley. It will include the present communities of Menifee, Quail Valley, and Sun City. For those who don't remember, Sun City (in California) was the original old folks retirement community started by Del Webb in 1962. Even today, most of the neighborhoods in Sun City have a requirement that the head of the household must be over 55 years old. Consequently, there are very few young children, although there is a toy store (well, there was one when I left California!) Most people who live in the restrictive area of Sun City are afraid that their neighborhood will lose its identity with the incorporation.
