I wouldn't dismiss Steve with the "trying to make a buck" label. He's an an accomplished performer in business for the long haul. He can't afford to give you a bum steer.
There have been a few postings about the Kanstul on this board. Generally, the reviews were pretty good, with the main critique being the price.
Play the thing and decide. Steve won't cheat you.

I have tried the new smaller bell model which, to be honest, was hard work in the top register. They did not have a larger copper bell version assembled at that time, but did say it was more free blowing, and I imagine the sound would be quite different.

I've played the copper bell euphonium . They were available at the Army Tuba/Euph conference. There is a definite sound diffrence compared to other euphs. I don't really have the experience or the skill to but a stamp of good ,bad or indiffferent on it . I just know I preffered my own euph. over it . I know this isn't much help but my point is you need to try it yourself and form your own opinon .
If nothing else it is very interesting looking . The quality of the construction is very good. As good as any other top-o-the-line instrument maker .

Another vote for front action bell up. I hate the ergonomics of top valves.

Kanstul Euphoniums
Hi All,
I was in Anaheim in January and stopped at the Kanstul showroom. They had five euphs, custom orders, sitting out on a table and invited me to play them all. I borrowed a 6 1/2 AL from them and proceeded to try them out. I am not a great euph player, but they all played well, in my opinion. There were 11.5 and 12 silver bells and one with a copper bell, if I'm remembering right. There were the expected differences in tone and the copper bell was dark, but the tone was beautiful to me. I didn't notice any obvious intonation quirks but was without a tuner.
The fit and finish on these horns was very fine, I would be afraid to take one out of the case for fear of damaging it! I'm playing on a 1975 Besson now and I like it fine with a Wick 4AL, but, if I had the cash and were in the market for a new euph, I would certainly consider these Kanstuls. I'd also consider their 4 valve alto horn, that was real nice, too. Charles, the sales manager, was very accommodating and helpful. I would have taken the factory tour (factory's around the corner from the showroom) but they were setting up for NAMI and couldn't do one the day I was there. We'll probably go in January next year again, and I'll try to get the tour then.
