Looks to be a 6 valve model, not a "slide-kicker" version paddle to me. Possibly the 5th lowers the horn a flat whole step and the 6th valve is a 1/2 step valve. Very logical design. I really like the positioning of the valves.

I guess it's just a matter of personal preference, but in the last year I switched from a 5+0 configuration horn to a 4+1 configuration horn. I MUCH prefer the latter. I never could seem to get my thumb to behave as I wanted it to on that 5th valve paddle.

Musical instrument manufacturers can make any instrument you want if you are willing to pay the price. Sometimes those specially made instruments make it into the general advertisements. Roger Bobo once had a G Mirafone tuba that was seen in the TUBA Journal about 20 years ago.

Of course, he is playing the Air on the G String... without a G-string!

Shocking. Simply shocking.

It is Bobo and the G tuba.

In all seriousness, I would REALLY like to get a chance to play on that tuba, if the owner is willing, someday, please, please, please . . .

1. re: Bobo photo -- long ago there was a thread that concluded he was playing the tenor tuba in Bb, not the G tuba. I don't know which it is, but I'm pretty sure I remember an older consensus that this was the Bb tenor.

Pros / cons to this viewpoint?

2. re: valve layout on 6V F -- **IF** 4+2, THEN I much prefer having the "top most valve" (operated by index finger on left hand) control the long whole step, and the 2nd valve down (controlled by the middle finger) be the flat half step. A few F tubas are set up this way, but not the majority. This makes more sense to me, as I then substitute my LH index finger for my RH index finger whenever I've got the 4th valve depressed. And I substitute the LH middle finger for the RH middle finger. Seems so much more logical to me.

Regardless, I would actually prefer the 5+1, where you have a more "standard" set of fingerings as the default, and add the flat half step LH 6th as needed.

Cheers,

Reminds me of the Reality Show Survivor contestant a few years ago -- what's his name? -- The one who went to jail for tax evasion after winning the million.

Also reminds me of how I felt last season playing the Camphouse piece in community band.
