PT-50

Post by Michael Roest »

Hey,

I wouldn't mind messing around with a Kelly PT-50.
Let me know how much they are, when you get them, how soon I can get one, and I will buy one (as long as it isn't too expensive that is).

Thanks!

Hey! Can I join in from this side of the pond?
Perhaps we can get all the UK ones shipped together? Sort them out at this end to save on cost?

Just talked with Jim --

Since the outside diameter of the rim is larger than anything else in the Kelly line, he's getting started with a larger blank to use for the mold. Once that's rolling, we'll try it out, and actual production will begin.

He says that he's happy to see the interest here, too.

I would be a buyer at $30 as well. What color will these be done in?

I'll take one of those mouthpieces, too, if it's reasonably priced ($30 range) but I'd prefer it in whatever color he'd like to make it in as opposed to trying to get it to have a metal-imitation appearance. I'm prepared to go with the majority on the aesthetic point, however.

At $30, count me in too. Color no object (except maybe no lime green for me)

I've now been informed that he'll have to make them all a single color.

No, not lime green (sorry), but the ever-popular "Strawberries & Cream Swirl" has been chosen for the inaugural "KT-50" color.

Sept 5th -

Jim tells me that it'll be a couple months before production is fully underway and the mouthpiece gets released.

Also, rather than deal with both him & myself for a group purchase (neither of us thought there would be this much interest!), he suggested contacting him directly, and he'll set up a list of buyers. He'll contact everyone once they're ready.

Should be just in time for the winter funeral season! ;)

Any news yet?

I wondered if anyone has heard any news about when these will be available, or if the project is still on track?

As much as I wish everything I wanted was free and I just had to roll off of the couch once in a while to live my life, that's not the case for me or anybody I know. I work to earn money. All of that work involves music because it is something I work hard to do on a daily basis, and because I've been really lucky. Other people I know do other things for their money, sell stocks, write books, try to cure cancer, make jewelery, have a little money coming in from an internet site, whatever. The similarity is that we all do something that gets us money, that sometimes it would be easier not to do. This might be called "working hard". Sometimes at night when I'm taking the subway home from work, I see people playing 3 card monte with tourists, or breaking into cars, and I certainly saw instruments I knew were stolen coming in the door of a music store I used to work in by "players" who didn't know which end to play. This might be called "stealing". I can't believe that we (the musical community) can get so excited about a blatant rip off of a product that is still available to buy. We're not talking about reworking tubas that have not been made since 1940 or using this defunct company's design ideas, we're not talking about trading tapes of "one of a kind" legendary lessons, we're not talking about copying our own "custom made" "one of a kind" mouthpiece, we're not talking about helping someone develop something new. Are we all happy with the development of horns and mouthpieces? We must be, because when the designers are not able to get back their investment of time and money for something that works and works well, they will stop designing things. I wonder why we as artists are stealing music (in the form of xeroxing and burning CD's we haven't paid for), and then complaining that there is no market for our art, or there are no tuba CD's in the store, or that music shops don't carry any sheet music for tubas. What example do we set when we steal (in this case a design) from one another? Is there anybody out there who owns ripped CD's of "insert name of favorite player here" and wonders why they don't play in your town? If I were perfect or even close I would stand up and say it now, and I'm absolutely not. I just hope we can think a little bit before we jump at the first "bargain", because it's never a bargain, sometime and maybe not soon but sometime the bargain will cost us more than anybody saved. You can flame me, or whatever you like, my email is attached to my profile as it's been attached to everything I've ever posted to Tubenet, right next to my name. Peace. Arnold S. Gottlieb
