Hey folks...

There is a great band that features TUBA that is making some pretty big waves (and the tuba player was one of my first students!)

I went to go hear them here in NYC a couple nights ago and they were WONDERFUL! (they had two huge sold out shows here in NYC!)

The band is called "Devotchka" and they were nominated for a Grammy for their work on the Academy Award nominated film Little Miss Sunshine, they did a majority of the soundtrack. The music is rock, mixed with some folky and eastern European vibes as well.

The bass / tuba player is Jeanie Schroder who plays both sousaphone and acoustic bass -- she has her degree in tuba performance from the University of Colorado at Denver. The band hails from Denver, but is now performing worldwide.

I just wanted to give a plug for this band -- and give some deserved Kudos to a tuba player who is really making it big!! Check em out!

Here is a Rolling Stone article about them:

I second the motion. What I've heard of this band has been amazing. Was pretty disappointed I didn't get tickets before they sold out for a show in Chicago a while back. Haven't heard any cuts with tuba, but I'm sure they're killer; time to go find a CD! Looking forward to hearing a student of Joe's in action!
