An old beauty

Built around 1900 by F.A.Heckel - K.S.Hof-Instrumentenmacher Dresden

used by the pre-WWI German army.

Is not mine, will not be mine, but I still find this sample of old craftsmanship impressive.

I have a very similar looking tuba , which is a CC made by Orsi in Milan. I picked it up at some music store in the suburbs of Rochester, NY when I was a grad student at Eastman many moons ago. It has a terrible low register. I do use it every few years at the NYC Tubachristmas, though.
