'scrap horn'

I was wondering...Does anyone have a horn laying around thats in considerably less than perfect condition that you'd like to get rid of? I really want a project horn to build up.

What he said. Your best bet is to look in the local bandroom(s), because for most people, dead horns are just food for other horns...

Yes, i know. I have a few school projects...one, exchangeing the valve set on an old fiberglass souzy with the one outa storage and two resoldering the braces of an old trombone. But, i want something that i can make my own. Like your horn. I want something to piece togather and make a good horn. I found one in storage that does play great (definately not 'scrap brass'). It's an old conn 20J. but, i can't convince my director to let me buy it even though i'm the only one that's used it in the past....3 or 4 years. It just stays at my house untill my horn has to go to the shop or i feel like playing it at school. I'd love to get a hold of it, but i can't.

Well, perhaps you can make a "swap"... a repaired sousaphone and trombone for the 20J...

I got one of my first horns that way, building new Conn goosenecks in a pinch out of the dead ones and what was available. In return, (and I hadn't even asked for them), my highschool band director gave me two "dead" Conn 26K Eb sousaphones that became a great horn!

well there's two problems with that...sadly.

One: Our other Tubist moved so we don't need it anymore..It's just a project I want to do because It looks fun.

Two: She has to do a ton of paperwork for the school to condsider it

No such thing as 'scrap'. I buy loads of stuff from music store and school basements and just toss it in the 'spare parts' heap.

Most schools are not allowed to sell musical instruments until they are declared surplus... at which point they are required to offer the stuff at public auctions.

Find a small school where things are run by the 'band boosters' club. Maybe they will trade you some stuff on a 'trade three and fix one' basis. They love getting free repair work in exchange for their 'worthless' junk.

The Internet auctions are sometimes a good resource for 'parts'. On the other hand... I've seen absolute junk command some pretty good prices.... certainly more that I will pay!

well, i guess i'm in a good spot for that seeing as that my Dad's the Band Booster President. I agree. all horns are worth something. so, Project horn...

It MIGHT be a fun project for you to try to flip to a front action horn. I bet you could still use the valves, but then you'd have to "angle" or something the valve slides.

I don't want to sell it for scrap prices though.

What will you sell it for? I'm not overrun in money, but i do have an electric organ that I'd be willing to trade

Any one wanna trase an old beater for a perfectly good organ?

I also have a Yamaha Alto sax that i could trade to. I think it only needs one pad replaced (or resealed). other than that its fine.
