There was a hard core partyboy group in my squadron back at Marine Corps Air Station, Beauford,S.C. in 1963. They kept telling me how much fun they had getting drunk at Savannah Beach every weekend.
I let them talk me into going with them one lonely weekend when I was without a car.
We stopped at a quick stop store just outside the gate where they kept wine in the fridge and every body bought a quart to tide us over until we got to Savannah.
The wine was gone by the time we entered our first beach bar. We switched to the hard stuff before sunset and I lost my memory of anything that happened at around 10 P.M.Friday night.
I woke up Monday morning face down in the surf at Savannah Beach. I was wearing a blue suit I did not own with the pant legs cut off bermuda short length. I had no money, no wallet and no way back to the base.
I hitch-hiked back to the base and got written up for overstaying my weekend pass.
My drinking buddies said I was fun to party with and invited me to go again. There was a story about a juke box with a record stuck and repeating. My attempt to tap the jukebox with my barstool to hop the needle to the next groove resulted in the bar stool smashing all the glass in the top of said jukebox and all us Marines hightailing out of that bar.
I don't know. I don't remember and I refuse to ever again spend all my money, run afoul of the law drinking and hanging out with party animals.
It just isn't that much fun.
I'd rather drink a beer or two and blow a little tuber.
What did you do on the b-day you were old enough to drink?

On my 21st, it was thanksgiving day and I was staying at my grandmother's place with the rest of my family. We were several miles from any form of alcohol. On the other hand I didn't have to pay for my own drinks for about a year afterwards. Not being much of a drinker, that was equal to about a case of beer and 3 shots of scotch.

A friend (who is a year older!) had big plans to visit this local bar on my 21st b-day... Of course we had already been drinking when we got to the bar and of course they checked my drivers license which confirmed that I would turn 21 at midnight so they wouldn't let me in... Maybe it's because we were already drunk, I don't know!
It was kinda silly after being stationed in Germany for two years as a 17 to 19yr old and no one cared at all how much beer we drank... Boy that was a long time ago!!!
