A question for the craftsmen...

A trumpet player I played behind today had a Kanstul Bb with a Copper-plated bell which was then lacquered. What is the purpose of such a "3-ply" bell?

Are you sure it was copper plated?... or was it a copper bell? It's most likely it was a Kanstul with a solid copper bell. Word is on the street that solid copper bells give a trumpet a 'darker' sound.

Dan, I asked him about it, and he specifically said it was copper-plated brass. It seemed strange to me, too, but I wasn't going to argue the point. I would think, if nothing else, that the thickness of the two plies would make the bell kind of klunky. Anyhow, it was a trumpet; hardly worth worrying too long about it...

I'm sure it's a solid copper bell, as that's one option that Kanstul is well known for. Wouldn't that be sad to own a tuba and have no idea what it's made of?
