So what did I buy...

Post by dopey »

So long story short I bought this used Eb 3valve tuba off Ebay. The seller admitted to not knowing much about the horn but after speaking with him post auction I found out he actually is a instrument repair guy, mainly WW and guitars. He received this horn from another guy going out of business and it was in 3 peices. The valve section was unsoldered and some other stuff, he reassembled the horn himself.

Any ideas what it is? I have never heard of "x-ray" brand tuba. I am expecting it soon and will post how it plays and if I can find any more details about the horn.

That tuba looks very much like a small Eb one I bought cheap on eBay last year. Mine was labeled "Holton." Some people who looked at it thought it was probably made by Cuneson or some other French maker.

Mine was obviously intended to be a cheap student horn. The valves don't show signs of wear, but I need to use Hetman classic valve oil to keep them from leaking. [I suspect they weren't tight even when the horn was new.] It can be played in tune, but requires work to do so. It has a sweet sound in the mid and upper registers, but the low end is as thin as you would expect from a little horn that weighs only 12 pounds. For me it's an interesting occasional use horn -- the sort of instrument I don't mind bringing to a TubaChristmas or other mass event.

Cheers,
Allen

Thanks for the replies to this. I will post new pictures once I get the horn in my possession, as well about how it plays.

Any other opinions or comments are welcomed=)
