I gather from this discussion that the professionals now have their own exclusive forum.
I balk at calling myself a professional because my 24 years trumpeting and guitaring in a rock-soul-blues bar bands will not win me a back row gig with the CSO.

I never knew there was a separate professional forum - that is a great shame! I would have thought the tuba community is really too small to split into sub-groups - we can all learn from each other. But it is Sean's Forum and of course his decision.

I am a relative newcomer on TubeNet, only visiting the last three years. But it is quite obvious to me the drop off in posts - at least interesting or useful ones. I have started a few threads myself to try and drum up discussion with variable results. It is difficult to tell if a subject is going to generate a lot of interest, or die after one, or two posts.

Well, I suppose the message is, look at TubeNet less and spend more time practicing!

I agree with Jonathan. Tubenet has always, until now, seemed so open and democratic. A secret sub-society not open to all seems so clanish and undemocratic. While it is probably harmless "professional" topic discussions how do we know it isn't "All about Bob all the time"? When it was originally stated that one could get a "professional" designation I don't remember it being stated that there would be a separate exclusive area where the chosen can in effect change channels and speak about somebody behind their back etc. I could see how that would cause folks to post less.

How about it Sean - open it up to the cleansing light of day and let us peer inside to see if any cockroaches are scurrying about?

No kidding! And, who cares, anyway. Considering the high status of some of the professionals we have, I see no problem allowing them to have an additional, and separate, site. Don't tell me we have class envy even on TubeNet!

I think you are missing my point. This is nothing to do with "envy", or "paranoia". The point is that surely the main purpose of a forum like TubeNet is to exchange ideas and gain knowledge. By having a separate Professional Forum which is not viewable means, thoughts and knowledge is (possibly - we don't know without seeing) being given by some of the best musicians from which tubists aspiring to advance cannot learn.

The number of posts may be small, but just one may include a revelation. I can quite well see why Sean may want to have a separate forum where professional tubists can discuss without being argued with by spotty teenagers, but just feel it a shame that it is not viewable, so the rest of us can learn from any insights.

We armatures can only speculate and the glorious discussion that surely goes on in the pro section. It's like the supreme court... the Supreme Tubenet Freak Jury. Hopefully they will share their decisions on Rotor v. Piston and Silver v. lacquer.

Well yes I did - I think a lot of us serious amatuers are here in main part to gather the insight of pro's like yourself and it just seems like with a separate section maybe some of that insight stays out of sight.
