Can anyone recommend where I should start looking for cheap, used instruments for me to use as an elementary band teacher? I'm still in need on a flute, alto sax, horn and trumpet.
I figure for the trumpet I could get a cheap usable king off of ebay, since I know those are pretty durable, but what's the best place to find a flute, alto sax and horn that are playable and not expensive?

You've already discovered the on-line auctions. Prepare to spend a few dollars on practically anything you buy for repairs. Your next resource would be your local pawn shops. You also could try running an add in your local newspaper stating that you are buying used band instruments.Ryan_Beucke wrote:Can anyone recommend where I should start looking for cheap, used instruments for me to use as an elementary band teacher?

I've been usine Taylor Music for years. Good quality used/refurbished instruments for very good prices. http://www.1800usaband.com They give competitive school bids as well. I've currently got a $5k school order with them for my beginning band.

You might have luck by joining Freecycle and making a "wanted" post. Your local freecycle group will be on Yahoo groups.

Re: Buying used instruments
I've tried to get instruments more than once from Leisuretime; while his prices are good you get what you pay for. I sent back everything I bought and gave up trying that route. The guy is honest though in terms of accepting things back, even refunded my shipping (both times) because of snafus on his end.Lyle wrote:You Could check with Liesuretime Musical Instruments in Laporte, IN.

You can also buy used military band instruments from government auctions. I am not in the states right now. I am sure there are other people in this forum who know how to get some old instruments this way.

I have successfully gotten used instruments donated to the band using district newsletters, PTA meetings, community notices, direct letters included with school correspondence, etc. Everyone seems to have an old instrument hanging around taking up space in the basement or attic; rather than the hassle of selling it, they are often happy to donate it so some kid will be able to play. Yes, you will need to fix them to GPC, but you can't beat the acquisition cost!
Bearin' up!
