I think this is similar to the betting phenomena. Difference is, it's possible to win an auction when it's not possible to win a bet.

Winning an ebay auction without paying too much is a talent. Ya gotta learn to let things go and to not start your bidding too soon.

I find it varies from auction to auction. If you go to an auction with a lot of tools, then typically the tools will go for $$$$$. If you go to an auction that is mostly household stuff, then any tools that are also there will often go for next to nothing. As with any auction (and eBay) it all depends on who shows up. And with really large auctions, if you hang around until the end, lots of people get tired and leave and you can get great bargains then.
