Looking for a teacher in DFW.

I'm looking for a tuba teacher for myself in the North Dallas area. I'm an ex-horn player. I have a degree in horn performance, but embouchure dystonia ended my horn playing career. It doesn't seem to effect me on tuba, so I'm dumping the horn ( after 29 years and 10 years of trying to recover ) and going to try and become a decent tubist. I need someone to help me with the nuances of the tuba and some direction in my efforts to improve.

I'm also looking for my first tuba, but funds don't allow a high quality purchase. So I'm looking for a budget instrument to get my feet wet with. In the horn world Jupiter, is a don't touch brand name, for a descent horn. Is it the same for Tuba?

As an ex-horn player, perhaps a rotary F tuba might be right up your alley... I'm an Eb player, but I did like the Mirafone Firebird F when I played it. There are also a couple Mirafone 180's and 181's floating around for under $3500... Happy hunting!

I'm sure somebody in TX will chime in with a great instructer in your area...

Interestingly enough, F tuba has completely different fingers than horn. It is C tuba that has the same fingerings. It is because tuba is always a C part, so the different fingerings for the differently keyed tubas are actually a form of transposition. So If I played an F tuba I'd have to transpose like I was reading C horn for the fingerings to come out the same. And I have to transpose to G horn for a BBb tuba. Speaking strictly from a horn player figuring out the fingers on tuba kinda of way.

Most people seem to think it is OK. Not prime real estate, but OK. Something else to look at and ask around about are those Dalyan tubas that WWBW has on clearance. I get the impression that they are generally held in about the same regard as Jupiter, and they cost quite a bit less.
