Harvey Phillips recordings...
Can anyone tell me how many solo recordings Harvey Phillips made?
I have two of them, but I believe they are his first and third.
I'm talking about the original, vinyl recordings.
If anyone is selling these vinyl albums, drop me a line.
Thanks,
Frank Ortega

Harvey Phillips Solo Recordings
Hi Frank: There are essentially four solo albums-- all on the Golden Crest label. (1) Harvey Phillips, tuba (Milton Kaye and Bernie Leighton, piano. Includes Air and Bouree, Sonata for Tuba and Piano, by Alec Wilder, plus several others); (2) John Barrows, Horn-Harvey Phillips, Tuba (Bernie Leighton and Tait Sanford, piano. Comprises Sonata for French Horn, Tuba, and Piano, by Wilder, Serenade No. 12 for Solo Tuba, by Vincent Persichetti); (3) Harvey Phillips In Recital (includes the Sonata for Tuba and String Quartet, by David Baker, and Tuba Suite for Solo Tuba and Three French Horns, by Morton Gould); and (4) Harvey Phillips in Recital: For Family and Friends (comprises the Alec Wilder pieces plus three others). All LPs are currently out-of-print and unfortunately NOT available (yet) on CD. Good luck in your search for the remaining 2 LPs!

Thanks Mr. Shoop!
I probably should have gone to you directly.
I guess I have one and three and need two and four to complete my collection. I find these recordings to be tremendously inspiring, and hope they come out on cd soon!
Best Regards,
Frank

Harvey G. Phillips played with the "ALL STAR CONCERT BAND"
This is a Golden Crest Record CR 4025
On that recording he was the Co-producer and played CARIOCA as well as William Tell Overture - Scheherezade & other pieces.
Carioca was played as only Harvey Phillips can play it.
This record is one of my favorite recordings.
I don't know when it was recorded as I have had it for many years.

Harvey Phillips Recordings
Some of you might know that Mr. Phillips and I have been working on a comprehensive listing of his recordings (not just his solo performances) to be included in his upcoming biography. To date we have documented over 200.

I just ordered it! I'm looking forward to hearing Gunther Schuller's spin on it as well. I've read his book, "The Compleat Conductor" and seeing the way he analyses a score I'm sure he gives it some TLC.Dan Castillo wrote:Yes! Among the collection of downloads on my website are two solos by Harvey, part of a concert he did with the Coast Guard Band at Indiana University. You have to be a member of the forum to see the topic, but it's all free.

Fidelity is not CD quality because it was just done on a portable cassette with a couple inexpensive mics, but it's pretty good anyway.
It was great fun hearing Harvey play live at a fairly advanced age. He sounds very nice on these recordings. We were also very lucky that night to have Philip Farkas perform a solo. Both these folks were just as nice as good be. It was also fun for me to watch some of the newer band members' reactions to performing with the two icons of brass playing/teaching.
