A mouthpiece suggestion?

Post by Richardrichard9 »

So.. For getting into the National Honors Society my parents have decided to buy me a new mouthpiece. The only one that I have ever used it the Yamaha 64. I would like one that is appropriate for orchestra, band and small ensemble work. Any suggestions?

Well, for what you wrote you want a piece for, I'd say a funnel-cup piece would be most appropriate. That's just to start it off.

Have you tried out mouthpieces before? Some prior experience could help out.

You might want to try out a Conn Helleberg. You can get an idea about what other Helleberg-like mouthpieces are from the original [that has been revised]

I personally don't have a clue on how I could play on something so tiny as a Yamaha 64. The mouthpieces that Greg said are pretty good, but try to try out as many mouthpieces as you can first. You want to have a general idea and some direction of what piece you are going to get.

For a good high school tubist I strongly recommend a Kelly 18.

Right now I am playing on a Yamaha full size upright 4 valve tuba (school owned, unsure of the model).

I have never played anyother mouthpieces but the Yamaha 67C4 (I just checked and my first posting of 64 was incorrect, it is actually a 67C4).

The music stores around me don't carry many tuba mouthpieces (usually when I find some they are yamaha 64 and 67C4). So when I get one it will have to be either special order or ordered offline.

That's probably a YBB-641.

I used a 641 exclusively in 7th and 9th grade. Before I got my Conn Helleberg, I used a generic brand 24AW. It was much better for me in just about every aspect. Go ahead and order a Conn Helleberg. A new 120-S runs $50 retail.
