It has been my finding that you have to go out and find your teacher. All teachers have different styles of teaching and totally different attitudes, personalities, and approaches. All these things need to be considered when looking for a professor and you have to ask yourself how well will I learn from this person. Your studio professor becomes a close person in your life as a player so you have to find one that fits you. What may work really well for one person doesn't always work well for others, find what works the best from you and do everything he/she says.

If there is a "here after" (and I'm banking on it), that will be the best.

Phil Black at Wichita State is a great teacher. Patient and understanding, but informative where it counts. He's got the orchestral and chamber experience, and a virtuoso player. Just my $.02.

What do you want to do???
Play in a top military band?
Be a band director?
Play in a symphony?
Be an in-demand studio player?
Score film music?
Play in a jazz combo?
Be a minister of music?

Once you can answer those questions, you have a better idea of where to go.

Instead of talking to your plants, if you yelled at them would they still grow, but only to be troubled and insecure?
