Find a place nearby (or even not nearby) and actually play on some representitive instruments. Having just gone through an instrument search myself I can tell you that people have their hard and fast opinions, sometimes for good reasons, others "just because..."

I played quite a few horns in my recent search and I'm really glad I did -- when I finally settled on my Rudy, I knew what the qualities were in the horn that made it stand out from the rest for me.
