Willson Euphonium Concertante Premiere recording

Today Charley Brighton ( know as Highams here ) premiered The Willson Concertante for Euphonium & Orchestra by Joe Miserendino ( Pennsylvania ). Mr. Brighton performed the concertante with the Southampton University Sinfonetta ( Southhampton, England ) conducted by Andrew Morely.

The Willson Euphonium Concertante in it's orginal form was with piano accompinament. It was written by Joe Miserendino for his good friend Charley to celebrate Charley's sponsorship award as a Willson performing artist in the UK . The premiere of this piece was done in St.Mary's Parish Church, Slough,England February 5, 2005. The piece was then written for wind band accompaniment and performed with the City of London Winds by Charley with Joe Miserendino in attendance in June of 2006. John Andrews conducting .

Very kind of you Tommy, the concert was wonderful, such a young exciting orchestra and of course, the brilliant leadership of Andy Morley.

The planning behind doing these concerts is driven by the fact that (in my opinion) the Euphonium is STILL too rarely heard as a solo instrument with orchestra, certainly in the UK.

Two things have constantly come out of these performances I've done over the last few years;

1.... both the orchestra members in rehearsals and the audience at the concert, fall in love with the instrument!
Chances are they have never experienced the Euphonium in the solo spotlight, let alone seen it as part of the brass section in The Planets etc. and they are amazed at it's sound, range, technical feats etc.

2....they fall in love with Joe's music!
It's rare to get music that can be quite a challenge in accompanying, yet great fun to rehearse, and then to win over the audience on its first hearing.

I hope this inspires some of you to go and do the same. Get out there and sell the instrument, don't be like a fish out of water!

The rewards are tremendous.

Just to let you know, following on from the success of the Southampton concert, another orchestra based in Chelsea is very interested in doing a Concerto.
