Wanting a new instrument?

Does anyone else constantly find themselves wanting a new horn?? I know I don't really NEED one, but sometimes I can't help it......

Might it be a feeling that is similar to being a child wanting a new toy that is almost the same as a current one???

Just wanted to know if there were others plagued by a similar experience.

Having said all this, I just got my new F, which is FANTASTIC! However, I am now finding my eyes wandering in the direction of CC horns again......

Actually, I've even been looking at Euphoniums (especially since I will be teaching more and more, including Euph. students).

I guess I'm just an instrument junkie (as I have a trumpet, 2 tuba's, 3 guitars).

This isn't a meaningful post, just something I felt like tpying out while waiting for the girl to get ready.

Trumpet players and guitar players have both got to be the most "gotta have it" players out there.
Since you have both...

FWIW, I think we all have GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) to a greater or lesser degree. With instruments as large and as expensive as tubas, realities such as budgets and space limitations tend to place practical limitations on what we can do.

AND...

NO TUBA!!! I desperately need one but am super poor with paying for college and everything.

I hear ya.

For where I am in my development as a tuba player, I have a good horn- maybe a great horn. (King 2340 in reasonable shape) As a tuba player, what I *need* is to sit down and practice out of the Arban's until I have a consistent, reliable sound and rhythm. Then, I might be able to use a new horn of some type. I'm floggin' away at it- 1 hr. before work, 1 hr. after work. I'm making progress- low range is comin' in, high range is gettin' reliable and I'm learning to breathe properly.

I do want another horn, all shiny and new, that fits in one case and can fit in the back seat of my car with a little room.But, Frank Ortega has a big York for sale I would love to buy, Neptune's Cerveny 701 looks like a manly horn I could use and who ever heard of an American tuba player who didn't have a Conn 2xJ or a Martin Mammouth? A squeeling little Piggy might meet my needs or its little buddy, the BBb Arion. Or, I could through a wrench in the works of the whole operation and get a Norwegian Star. And guys here are startin' to talk about what a great horn the HoJo is...

Part of the fun is talking about the horns and buying what you can. Sure would like to have two or three... Back to the practicing...

I also understand and am fighting urges for yet another horn. After I got my C I figured that would be it, then my studio professor told me to get an F so I did. I love both of my horns but not to long ago I found a 3/4 Yammy and it was AMAZING, I felt like a kid saying "I want it, I want it, I want it". I dont have much need for it but walking away from a great horn is like walking away from a great beer

parts for another project
numerous amps, heads, speakers, boxes, accessories, a POD 2.0, etc.

But I can say, with the exception of the inherited piano, (hard to move that one around, of course), and of course, the project guitar that is still in parts, I have played them all in a formal or at least organized concert setting, and for the guitars and basses, all have paid their way with gigs, along with their associated amplifiers and such.

So I can truly say it's not GAS, but tools of the trade, as they have all been "tested in battle."

I'm a sucker for anyone who comes through the door wanting to sell a horn. Yesterday, I bought a Huttl valve trombone I have no use for whatsoever. A week or so ago it was a Cerveny 781. I buy boxes of junk. I buy horns that are missing parts. I buy stuff just for the sake of buying stuff. At any given time I have 20 - 30 low brass instruments around that I can basically 'take my pick' from. I have a few favorites like the Marzan (B & M built), a Mirafone 186 5V, a King 2341 with both bells, a King Eb 4V bell-front, and a variety of sousas and helicons that I might play once or twice a year each. I do sell a few horns,... but usually only when something more 'interesting' comes along, or I need the space.

Could I ever settle for just one horn? I doubt it. Only when the time comes to completely downsize and move my tired old *** to a nursing home will I give up my arsenal... and that won't really be a matter of my choice. I figure one of these days (hopefully long away) there will be one heck of an auction here! In the meantime... you can't have too many tubas. And.... parts is parts!

Maybe I am only beginning my geer acquisition....

Though, I have ALREADY vastly downsized because of moving on my own and needing to pay the rent.

Well, at least that's what I do.

I like to put a $ cap on my total tuba investment (gear only, music doesn't count). Sure I could spend more. But the only thing that will actually make me a better player is free (actually playing my tuba).

My problem feels to me more like a Retention Syndrome than an Acquisition Syndrome. If the old stuff would just go away, then the problem would be solved. Sometimes I hang onto things because, you never know, someday I might wish I had an F helicon, but mostly it's just not wanting deal with flea-bay and mailing a tuba to someone. Anyone in the Seattle area interested in a tuba swap meet?
