I feel that way about cars. I'm always on a car lot looking.pierso20 wrote:Does anyone else constantly find themselves wanting a new horn?? I know I don't really NEED one, but sometimes I can't help it......![]()

...and then think "Well, I could sell [this], and I could get some money for [that], and I probably can get by eating 1 meal a day for a few weeks, and...dammit."wchoc86 wrote:Man, and tubas cost so much, that it clouds your judgment, I look at the for sale forum and see these horns that retail for 8,000+ dollars that they're asking like 4500 for or whatever and I'm like, man, that is so cheap, I should pick that up.
Then I realize- Where the Hell am I gonna get 4 grand from?
Well, at least that's what I do.
I like to put a $ cap on my total tuba investment (gear only, music doesn't count). Sure I could spend more. But the only thing that will actually make me a better player is free (actually playing my tuba).

My problem feels to me more like a Retention Syndrome than an Acquisition Syndrome. If the old stuff would just go away, then the problem would be solved. Sometimes I hang onto things because, you never know, someday I might wish I had an F helicon, but mostly it's just not wanting deal with flea-bay and mailing a tuba to someone. Anyone in the Seattle area interested in a tuba swap meet?

If someone provides the venue, I will supply 1 (one) keg of fresh beer.

Instead of talking to your plants, if you yelled at them would they still grow, but only to be troubled and insecure?

There was a time some years ago when I figured that at some point I would own everything I needed, and then the large acquisitions would stop.
(I can hear the hysterical laughter from here, guys.....)
I've since given up on that entire concept, but I do have a rule in place about T shirts: every time I buy a new T shirt, I have to get rid of an old one. That at least keeps those in line....whenever I see a T shirt I just gotta have, I find myself going through all the old ones in my mind to decide which one I'd less rather have than the new one I'm looking at.
Most women have a zillion shoes, but I have a zillion T shirts. And only a half-zillion shoes.
And we won't even talk about the musical instruments that sit there on the shelf in their cases because "someday" I might play them "somewhere."

Hello, my name is Ken and I'm an instrumentaholic.....
I am in the recovering stages. However I realize this is a condition I will have to fight for the rest of my life. I went through this more with bones than tubas, especialy bass bones (at one time I had 4). Now I am down to 1 tuba, 1 helicon, 1 bass bone, 4 tenor bones (I tell my wife some of them are my son's... really two of them are....really....no, really...), 1 alto bone, 1 soprano bone, 1 electric bass, plus one of each band instrument (but those are for use at school to teach, I wouldn't play them in public).
