Last weekend the main tuning slide fell out of my 621 (again.) I was pulling my 3rd valve slide out to drain it and hooked the main slide with my glove. This slide has worked free and fallen to the floor while playing too. (The horn is really sharp unless I have it way out there.) So I'm wondering if anyone has a clean slide stop idea that I may be able to use. Photos would be great. I'm a machinist and I can fabricate pretty much anything, I just need some ideas.
Thanks so much.
Chris.

Le Vere,
I've done exactly this with a Yamaha 381 Eb slide. Since string can be obtained in a variety of colors, you could either try to conceal it (dark), or have it blend with the color or your horn, I suppose.
I suppose you could do the same sort of thing as people do with their 1st valve slide stops -- a thin metal rod, usually threaded I think, with a nut to determine how far out the slide can be pulled. This rod would have to be attached to the slide somehow, and be routed through some sort of ring or tube with the end that extends out through this having the nut screwed onto it. I've seen several of these from time to time -- does anyone have a picture?
Cheers,

Vincent Bach use slide stoppers on the main and 3rd slides of their non-lightweight trumpets.
This HUGE file (8MB+) has a good view of such mechanism on page 17 on the 3rd slide of a cornet:
