I think it's good news that the B&M Symphonic 5500 Bb tuba is still potentially available. Every one that I have played has been wonderful, and I think it deserves to be a real contender in the market if the price is right for Bb players in the United States.

And I am intrigued by the MWN 6 under the "Meister Walter Nirschl" brand. The description, to my non-German-speaking ears, looks like "Bb tuba, 4 front action piston valves, 5th rotary valve on the right hand, 6/4 size, big orchestral Bb tuba with a really big sound." Unfortunately, there are no pictures. Are these made only on special order? Is this a Bb version of the instrument Floyd represents?

All the Nirschl instruments, German and Indian, should be available from Gemstone/Gemeinhardt in the US. They'll also be representing Kruspe and Weril.

I have played the MWN BBb (as opposed to the 5500) and it is a honey of a BBb. I don't know the price but it's got to be one of the very best BBb's I've ever played.

Besson-ish compensating F?

Post by Kevin Hendrick »

The one that caught my attention is:
F–Tuba, Model MWN 1

F-tuba, 3 Perinet valves top action, 4th valve left hand, fully compensating, small F-tuba in the British style with the correct F-tuba sound.
Looking forward to seeing specs and price(s) from Gemstone/Gemeinhardt! :D

Price? It was quoted to me at over $12,000 and that before the dollar slid against the euro. I bet it's bumping easily over $15k.
