Dang- I have to miss it again this year! Our brass band has a concert that Friday night here in Raleigh with Doug Yeo as soloist, so at least there will be some mighty fine consolation.

I am planning on attending this year, for the first time. I always had conflicts related to school over the past several years and couldn't go, but I plan on driving down this year, unless we get some kind of bad snow storm. For those of you who have gone, can you recommend any of the nearby hotels, other than the one listed on the Army Conf. web page? I hear that the hotel becomes party city with people playing tubas and euphoniums all hours of the night. Who would ever imagine such a thing?

I have this really nice Martin that I bought about a year ago...

Google Maps (first page)

Also, a brand new (Dec 2007), upscale hotel (which might cut a deal for students, teachers, military members, AAA, AARP, government workers, etc., to sell empty rooms):

Palomar Hotel
1121 North 19th St
(1730 N Lynn St)
Rosslyn (Arlington), VA 22209

I just read all the reviews for the Days Inn directly across the pedestrian gate at Ft.Meyer and had to laugh . All were bad .

It's a dump! I stayed there last year. But.... It's cheap and you can walk back and forth to where the events are being held. But all the college kids stayed there so it was fun to watch them rasing hell !

If you follow this link: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=l&hl=en&g ... &z=14&om=1 ( Thanks Dean E ) it is marked is as "A" on the google map .

The Days Inn....

Post by Roger Lewis »

is referred to by some as the "murder" motel. I stayed there a couple of years ago and the door to my room had been kicked in so many times that it wouldn't seal properly and they had put all these extra supports on the door to try to keep it from happening again. Not really worth it IMHO

I used to stay at the Sheraton National - but that finally became too expensive. My new location is the Hilton Garden Inn, a stone's throw from the Quarterdeck.

I'm staying in the Pentagon Days Inn which is a little bit away. It seemed to be slightly better accomodations then the crappy Days Inn that people are used to going.

On Hotels.com I got a better deal there too! $70 a night!

Oh, I LOVE the Days Inn.

Last year on the Sunday after the conference we tried to leave the hotel to go to the airport, but the door to our room wouldn't open. That's right - we were locked IN the room. After the front desk sent two helpless cleaning ladies to try to open it, they finally had to destroy the lock. I can't complain - the comped one night, we didn't miss our flight, and I got to practice my Spanish with our would-be rescuers.

That being said, I'm staying there again this year so I can walk to the conference and enjoy
party city with people playing tubas and euphoniums all hours of the night.

Priceline, Priceline, Priceline. I have used them for 3 years straight and get a room for around $55.00 every year. Marriott is usually the hotel with is a 3 star+.

No luck yet, but I am hoping to get something the week before.

There's also a nearby Quality Inn showing an $80 pre-tax rate, but I didn't check availability:

Quality Inn Iwo Jima
1501 Arlington Blvd.
Arlington, VA 22209
Phone: (703) 524-5000

I searched http://www.qualityinn.com/ for Arlington, VA.

EDIT (Jan 15, 2008)
And very near the Quality Inn is the former "Hotel 50.":
Inn of Rosslyn
1601 Arlington Blvd (US 50), Rosslyn (Arlington), VA
(703) 524-3400

Being close in probably is worth an extra $20 or so per night, because the commuting traffic is horrible. Go 25 miles away to get a $60 room, and you might have a 60-minute drive Thursday and Friday mornings.

Kevin,

Call today and cancel. Believe me... There should be no cost and you can move somewhere else...

 Murder Hotel...!?! Yikes...
yep, taken care of that... Hilton Garden Inn right in downtown (for me this is as much a conference weekend as it is a trip to DC) and cheaper to boot!

Question for you guys who go to these things more regularly than I...

I've got 4 mouthpieces that I'm hoping to get rid of and buy that "perfect" mouthpiece at the workshop. Do vendors typically give any cash in exchange for mouthpieces, or am I best to sell on here?

Thanks!

You're much, much, much better off selling here. I don't think you'll get any traction in the trade arena with the vendors.

I stayed there last year and was pleased with the room, service, and price. Kind of a strange parking lot to get into... getting out is easier.
