Polovetsian Dances from Prince Igor - Aleksandr Borodin
España - Emmanuel Chabrier
Have any one you played either of these pieces? My school's symphony orchestra (joint band-orchestra group) is playing these two and I wanted to know what you people had to say about them.
Many fanks!

I have played both, but don't remember too much about the Borodin. I'm assuming that since I don't remember much about it, it is not a difficult part. Typical romantic writing, though.
Espana is a fun piece to play, and listen to. As I recall, it's range goes up to a middle C (chromatic run-up). Be ready for some hemiola action!
Have fun!

Borodin/Chabrier
What means "rat the D?"
Borodin wrote some nice tuba parts -- this one is OK. Some loud low exposed tonefarts. You need to be ready.
Espana is just good clean fun - stick with the trombones and count.

Haha, I definitely know what you mean by ratting on the D.
The director praised me specifically for that at one rehearsal.
The Chabrier is really tough for me to count. Our director conducts sitting down, so it's really tough to see him. Me and the bass trombonist are just sitting there being dumb until the chromatic runs come in.
