I had the fine pleasure of sitting beside Col. Rotondi Jr. and his wife during the Friday night concert (of which the photo from above originates) and the three of us were sort of marveling at the idea of how much money in tubas and euphoniums there were on stage. My guess was around $600,000!!

Of course we (those reading the 3rd Tuba parts) got the 'hand,' particularly during the initial rehearsal. Star Wars called for low A's, G's and F's, at a ff dynamic, but Prof. Stevens kindly asked that we tone it back a notch. Yes, sir!

I would really like to hear a recording of that performance of Star Wars! Probably my stereo can't do it justice, but it would still be worth seeing if it could, and frightening the neighbors.

PS: and one of these years....I'm going to get my chops in shape starting a couple months ahead of time (that's all the better I play, only takes two months to get from here to there...) and go to this blinking conference; it just comes so soon after Christmas and it catches me off guard. Four years from now....I'll be retired, and then I will have no excuses any more.

You forget I work for a company that makes and sells a flavor of Linux, and that I have more working and active computers within 5 feet of me (3 laptops, 2 workstations, and one Mac Mini) than I do digits on any given apendage.

BTW Tom, since you spoke up, how's that free one year membership to ITEA you won at the conference this year treating you? Rumor has it you're being nominated for office and your name will appear on the next ballot.

The JMU ensemble played a "Top Gun" piece that wasn't in the program. I think one of the students arranged it with various music from the movie. That is why the aviator sunglasses and outfits. They played standing and acted out a bunch of the stuff. Really entertaining.

so what row were you in on the left side? I too was on the far left side... also just out of range of these pictures. Did I meet a Tubenetter and not even know?

For the Thursday session, I was on the back row, at stage left, and was at the end of the row until Bill Troiano showed up. I was sitting between him and Art Hovey. That picture cuts off that corner of the ensemble, thank goodness. But my Miraphone is in the picture, being played by Ray Grim.

And on Saturday, I was on the end of the back row at stage right, on the far end of the picture, until a couple of latecomers made a new row (of two players) and again extended my row one person out. That young'un was playing a Yamaha 321, which you can see. My face is (again, thankfully) obscured by the bell of the Holton. Sloan is to my left, playing the York Master, and having to listen to all my wrong notes.

In the Sat. photo, half of me and my 52J (without the 5th vavle, although it can't be seen) can be seen to the far left. Then, in the 2nd photo, I don't seem to exist. Then, I remembered I didn't stay for the end of the session, so that I could meet my nephew, who works in DC, for dinner before the finale concert. It's not the first time I felt like I didn't exist.
