What Key is This Tuba In?

Interesting placement of the main tuning slide. I think it's probably an F tuba... but possibly Eb tuba. Most certainly not a euphonium.

It might even be somewhere in the middle, e.g. a high-pitch Eb tuba...

I got it today. I still am unsure since it uses a small shank tuba mouthpiece and mine still hasn't gotten back from Dillon. I taped a standard mouthpiece to the receiver and was able to play Eb or F in tune, but without mouthpiece, it plays in F. So, I'm still thinkin' it's an F.

I finally brought home my bass bone mouthpiece so I could do some tubaing.

It is defiantly in F. One very odd thing about it is the small receiver. The bass trombone mouthpiece only goes in a quarter inch!

I removed most of the dents, polished, and applied a few patches in the bell.

I finally put the valve paddles and linkage. I still need new springs but for now, I've got some rubber bands working for me. So I was finally able to play some songs on it. Wow, this girl sure does sing beautifully! The high range is outstanding and the low range is also great with the exception to the low B natural.

After I got this thing playing, I realized it plays really flat. I just started chopping it down to play in tune. So I removed the slide legs and braces for them, but after a few seconds of flame there would be smoke pouring out of both sides (bell and leadpipe.) I took a paper towel and wiped the inside of the crook of the main slide and and the paper towel had some black stuff on it from the wipe. After I finished taking the parts off I did a cleaning with the salt, vinegar, dish soap, and water mix.
I did a little more taking apart with the propane and propane accessories and the smoke still poured out. The black stuff is still present.

So here is the question: Do you think this stuff is pitch, what should I use to clean it, should I get a gas mask...

any chance of getting it ultrasonicly cleaned? that might help remove whatever gunk is smok'n when you work on it.

I might since it is pretty dirty and a little "fragrant"

The local tech does have have the machine.
