It's rumored that the tuba studio head at Arkansas Tech is opening up in the fall of 2008.

Interesting and sad if true. He'd still be department chair?

Is it confirmed that the Kansas State position is open? I've been in touch with the tuba prof (name escapes me at the moment) about applying for grad school there, but this might change my mind.

Wes,

It's official. He'll be retired completely as of May 2008... department head and all. The guy you, and I as well, want to leave will be gone the following year... supposedly.

Colleges are required by NASM to do a national search when a tenure-track job is available. This also means when they are promoting an Instructor to an Assistant Professor. Most often, I see the person hired as the Instructor gets the job, but I have seen a few times that another person getting hired for the position. Many schools automatically advance the Instructor to the final interview stage (since he/she is already there it doesn't cost much to the school.) And the Instructor has been at the school for a while, often knows what school might be needing, even without being told from someone.

That's what I gather from being on both sides of the interview process.

Just to be clear,

Wayne State mentioned above refers to Wayne State College in Nebraska, not Wayne State University in Detroit, MI, at least as far as I can tell.

Nothing as of yet regarding Arkansas Tech. There have been rumors flying around, but the committee in charge of finding a new tuba studio head is more focused on finding a department head right now. By the way, the head of the tuba studio was also the department head.

Is it just my imagination, or the few job openings that we have for tuba/euphonium players are even fewer this year?

i would assume this is due to many people filling up holes from last year. most are put on a tenure track and at the end will either stay or they'll have a year to find a new job. at least this is how it works at my university. here, the tenure track is typically 4-5 years (less if deemed qualified).
