When I first decided to take lessons from Mike Sanders, I wrote him a letter, and addressed it to the San Antonio Symphony (where he was playing at the time). After a couple of weeks, he responded with his phone number, and also with his price.
Be aware that someone of Gene's class usually needs more reasons than money to make a hole in his busy schedule. And also consider that the price he charges may be more about you than about him--were I him I wouldn't charge everyone the same. Think about that when you write your letter.

1. Canada has a military?Kory101 wrote:As I will be in a Military Band for the summer making about $100 a day I could easily drop $200 on a lesson and not think twice about it.
2. With that attitude, I don't know if a man like Gene would teach you for $400. You may just want to buy his excerpt CD and call it a day, eh?

Is anyone buying this?
Let me see if I have this straight...the OP comes on here asking if anyone has had a lesson with Gene Pokorny (whom he calls "Gene"...nice respect) and what his going rate for a lesson would be. Later we find out he has sent "Gene" some excerpts and is told that "Gene" would be glad to instruct him, but doesn't include any mention of how much $$$ he charges.
So, instead of contacting "Gene" about this, he thought he'd just ask the helpful people on the TubeNet forum.
I hope this is all a colorful attempt at humor...if, by some chance it is a true story, I would recommend to the OP that he contact his new instructor vis-a-vis his lesson rate since no one here would have the foggiest idea what he might charge you. Secondly, I would caution against calling your new professor "Gene" or a highly-regarded professor such as Rex Martin as "Rex"...there is still such a thing as respect, especially for such giants of our particular little field.
No wonder people my age shake their head in amazement at the antics of today's "Me" generation...sheesh...

I wasn't expected to get my head ripped off here. If people don't want to believe me, that is fine.
First of all: I called him "Mr. Pokorny" and he told me to call him "Gene" same deal with "Mr. Martin." All I did was email the CSO orchestra manager and she forwarded my email to "Mr. Pokorny" and he responded.
Secondly: I was simply trying to get some information from people who may have got lessons with him. Is that such an unreasonalbe question? I don't think so, but apparently there is something taboo about this. I emailed Gene asking what he charges but hasn't got back to me since last week. Just trying to find out some info from people who may have studied with him and I get my head ripped off. Not what I was expecting

Sorry, you're wrong. I took a lesson from him for under $200, and as far as I know I was never put on a waiting list. Working out a time where we were both available took some skill, but it happened.tubashaman wrote:i can nearly guarantee your going to spend more than $200, and send in your note now, im sure he has a waiting list

Let me see if I have this straight...You have no answer to the original post yet you still feel the need to post a sarcastic, mean spirited reply. Kory is a young, keen tuba player and is just trying to find out what to expect cost wise from other people who have had lessons with Gene/Mr. Pokorny/whatver you want to call him. Get a life.

Re: Gene Pokorny Lesson
I'm sorry...I'll be less sarcastic and more clear.Kory101 wrote:Has anyone here got a lesson with Gene Pokorny? Any idea what he charges? Im going to be in Ottawa during the summer and will be making a trip to Chicago to see Gene and Rex. Just wondering what Gene's going hourly rate is.
Gene Pokorny's "going rate" for lessons is his business and between his students and him. It is NOT fodder for message board discussion (see the "$200" posts above) or speculation, certainly not in a public venue such as TubeNet.
To the OP...since you have already emailed Mr. Pokorny about his rate, I would suggest that you wait for his reply, or simply ask again if you feel like enough time has gone by...I really don't see the rush. It is in very bad taste to bring up the subject on an open message board on the internet...I doubt any of the private instructors on here want their students shooting off posts about their rates, either.
I apology for coming off harshly, but that's the way I am, and I call 'em like I see 'em. Your story seemed very far-fetched to me...sorry for jumping to conclusions...it's easy to do with the lack of context here.
However, I'm just a stranger on a message board...if you call this thread "getting your head ripped off," you might want to grow a thicker skin before you head off to that military gig.
