Hello all,
I've been asked to perform on a chamber series in May with string quartet. Some have suggested Schubert & Mozart String Quintets (2 cello parts). Other thoughts were features for horn, cello, or bassoon with string quartet...any ideas?? Thanks! Jobey
Tuba & String Quartet??

Jobey,
The David Baker Sonata for Tuba and String Quartet is a nice piece. May want to look at that.

Cherubini
Hi Jobey,
The Cherubini Horn Sonata (No. 2, I think) is a great little chart for horn and strings, that is often done by tubists on F tuba (an 8ve lower) and string quartet. I heard Roland Szentpali do it on a recital once and he sounded great--it's not terribly difficult, yet very "classical" even from this romantic era composer. It has that great trait of sounding much harder than it is--and should be easy to get a hold of.
Jan Bach has also written something very cool/hard--email Jay Hunsberger in Florida about this. I think he's at USF: Univ. of South Florida.
Good luck!
Mike

Jobey,
Years ago, Harvey Phillips had a string quartet with solo tuba written for him by Manny Albam, a composer/big time arranger in NYC. Same time as the Jan Bach piece - 1979 or so. It's pretty good with some jazz harmonies subtly laced in it. I don't believe it is published, but you might be able to get it from him if you can track him down. If not, I could lend out my set.
Good luck - it's nice to play in that medium.

Roland Szentpali's Ballade is very listenable and exciting for the audience. Pretty virtuosic, though; the quartet parts take a bit of work, but the solo part really gets around the horn. In case you wanted something modern.
Hey, Jobey! I'm sure you'll knock 'em dead, whatever you end up performing.

Thanks for the help, everyone! Ordered the Cherubini Sonata no.2 in F for Horn & String Quartet, and Carig Garner (www.dorm40music.com) hooked me up with an Albinoni work. Speaking of Craig, Triton performed two more of his great arrangements last weekend with organ at King's Chapel; Brahms Variations on a Theme by Haydn & Maestoso from Saint-Saens Organ Symphony. Craig's arrangements are GREAT!!! Check them out!!
