2.79 around here right now...
About the ethanol, I have a buddy that drives a VW Jetta and his mechanic told him not to buy the cheaper ethanol gas because of potential engine issues as well.
What about the environment, is ethanol really any better?
ADM is in Decatur, where I go to college. The dang place (along with Staley) makes the whole town reek like soy and corn processing non-stop.But ADM and the big agribusiness gets bigger subsidies for ethanol.

i agree and this drives me nucking futs because it seems extremely obvious (to me anyway) but not people such as my mother. she always says O gas is only at a Dollar Nine now......meanwhile its 109.9Chuck(G) wrote:Yes and no, Mark.
There's an old marketing study (probably from the 1930's) that says that folks tend to think that $1.99 is LOTS cheaper than $2.00.
That's why you almost never see a merchant pricing things at $1.07 if he can help it. $0.99 seems SO much cheaper. Cruise through the supermarket and see how many prices end in "9".
Basic psychology.

I just took a road trip to see the Mississippi River with my daughter- When we left, gas in Vermont was over $3.40, with prices wildly variable from station to station. Nice to hit the middle states where things seemed to settle a bit. However, I had to replace the fuel pump regulator and under-car fuel filter in W.VA. (Not an easy job, finding parts for an '88 Volvo...)
So - are we exchanging quality for price?
Any hints for a vintage vehicle?

Corn ethanol is a sham. I haven't read one substantial report/study that truly touts corn ethanol as a viable option. I've read it takes one gallon of oil-based-fuel (diesel and/or gasoline) to produce 1.2 gallons of ethanol. Add to this the 15-20% reduction in mileage and it sounds like pure stupidity, doesn't it?
Brazil is doing well with sugar-based ethanol. Sugar converts to ethanol much easier than corn (sugar begins to ferment on its own almost as soon as it is cut). It takes 1 unit of farm-fuel to make 8 units of sugar ethanol, so it just makes much more sense. Of course, we can't grow sugar.... so...
There are other crops we can use for ethanol, but not yet. Switchgrass is a possibility. It grows almost anywhere with very little "farming" required. Celluosic ethanol can be made from sawdust, paper waste, or plants like switchgrass. A quick google search yielded this article:

I say lets build some clean power plants (wind, solar, nuclear), and start passing out the electric cars!
