The first time I marched into Alumni Bowl at Tuskegee Institute, I could hear the crowd chanting something. I asked one of the Pipers (this is what the members of the band are called... I was a new member, so I was a "Crab") "what is the crowd saying?' He told me they were chanting "Tu-ba Funk, Tu-ba Funk". We hadn't played a note yet. At the end of the day, give the crowd what they want. There'll still be time for the good stuff.

I cant stand the way they sound! This is absolutely terrible! This is exactly how a tuba should NOT sound! There is no musicality or tone in anything they did! I have heard high school tuba players that sound better than them.

Not everything has to be some big, tubby, dark "orchestral sound"!

We must reserve room for crass, spread tone, brighter than a thousand suns, uncontrolled tuba sounds as well.

As tuba players, we spend our musical lives as afterthoughts. Its nice to be center stage every now and then.
