Helleberg rim with a Bach 18 cup?

Post by JB »

I was recently approached with this question from a mature, amateur player: he wants to find a mouthpiece with the cup of a Bach 18 and a Helleberg-style rim. Does such a thing exist?

(I have noticed the TU 128, TU N•128, and TU NF•128 on he Doug Elliot site, but have no first-hand experience to base an opinion.)

Anyone know of something that fits this description?

Thanks

Maybe a Laskey Geib? I haven't seen a G, but I have seen an H, and if the rims are the same or similar, I think that fits your description pretty well.

Tell him to send a Bach 18 and a Helleberg he likes to Stork, and have the Bach rim changed to the Helleberg profile.

Check the Stork website:
http://www.storkcustom.com/html/service ... LTERATIONS
The site indicates $30 for the modification. Not a very expensive proposition. I've looked into this for my own needs, and my understanding is the $30 includes replating the rim. Double check.

Remember that Bach are notorious for making their mouthpiece cup diameters larger than "spec." The last recent 18 I played had a cup diameter of 1.28".

Vladimir at Dillons will take any mouthpiece and recontour any rim you want on it at a very reasonable price and turn around. I was absolutely pleased with the Curry 128D that he turned the mouthpiece rim down from its stock wide profile to an 18 profile which I prefer, and which fits my chin better. It would be better in the long run to find a mouthpiece that you like in all other aspects, including cup diameter and geometry, throat and backbore, and have the rim recontoured and tailored to your requirements, as that is the easiest aspect of a mouthpiece to change.

Then again, the MF5, if you want a 33mm cup, looks like a great mouthpiece.
