CBC Radio Orchestra being shut down

Post by tubafatness »

I saw this a couple of days ago, and I think it is a damn shame.

Here's some other links, including info on some protests and a letter from the orchestra' directory, Alain Trudel

National Post wrote:"This is the most important orchestra in the country, with a 70-year history," Mr. Miles said. "What the CBC is doing to their mandate is what [U.S. president George] Bush is doing to the [U.S.] constitution."

I guess they aren't expecting any help from rich folk in the U.S. Also, I wonder how Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal feel to know that none of their orchestras are the most importatnt orchestra in Canada.

At straight.com, the woman below is identified as playing with the Vancouver Symphyony, yet she is carrying a sign that implies she plays for the Okanagan Symphony. A quick Internet search shows she does in fact play for the Okanagan Symphony and not the Vancouver Symphony. And, it is not clear that straight.com got her name right. Makes you wonder what other facts they got wrong. Is she their principal cymbal player?

It's always bad news when good musicians lose their jobs. How much have you contributed to this orchestra over the last few years?

I'm not alone in being very upset with the restructuring going on at the CBC. Shame on them.

Professional orchestral tuba chairs are already rare enough in the world. But I've had conversations recently with a couple of tuba players who've indicated that the situation was already fiercely competitve, particularly in Canada, before the latest development.

Which leads to the inevitable question:

Who has been the Principal Tuba of the CBC Radio Orchestra?
