Old tuba pics-Webster, Conrad, Del Negro-Holton

Post by bisontuba »

HI-
While adding some new material to my 'archives,' I acquired a c. 1920 Holton booklet that has 3 tuba players featured--from 'conceded by critics to be the greatest symphony brass section of any American Orchestra'--is pictured a tuba player (only one who does not play a Holton)-'Webster.'
NOTE: FOR OTHER PICS, SEE A POSTING BELOW--WITH THE NEW TUBENET SOFTWARE, I HAD TO CHANGE IMAGE INFO-THANKS!
Second pic is of leading musicians of phonograph work with Victor, and it shows Herman Conrad (of Sousa fame) on a Holton.
Third pic shows members of the Chicago Grand Opera Co. with Luke Del Negro (of Sousa fame) on a Holton--I believe it to be the 'Del Negro' model Holton (which, sadly is not featured or mentioned in the booklet---along with another tremendous Holton BBb tuba that is not shown--the Richardson model-of Jack Richardson. I was hoping that the Richardson would be shown--Don Harry has one of these-silver, BBb, with 4 huge pistons--he had it rebuilt and recently even used it for a recording of 'Church Windows' on Naxos--a wonderful horn & a great piece).
Enjoy the pics-

Holton

HI-
Here are some larger pics--of course, more grainy, but bigger and take more time to load. NOTE: I HAVE CHANGED THE LINK SINCE THE NEW TUBENET SOFTWARE NEEDED IT TO SHOW IMAGES. Also, I think the booklet is from c. 1920. Del Negro is holding a Holton Del Negro tuba--I don't have a pic of Don Harry's Richardson tuba. Pics are of #1-Webster, #2-Conrad, and #3-Del Negro. Enjoy.
Regards-

There's a video of Murray Crew with the PSO describing his 1902 Conn contrabass trombone he uses to play just 2 notes in a performance of Bartok.

I couldn't figure out how to embed the YouTube link  I did it for you - woodsheddin

Thanks Sean. Just read the changes you made to embed the link. Sheesh, I should have been able to figure that out myself.

Does anyone know any more about this Conrad fellow? My last name is often spelled that way (not by my choice). I've never heard of him and am kind of intrested.
