We had a gentleman from the National Orchestra Association come speak to us a few years ago.The one stat that stuck with me was this: there are around 150 job openings per year on all orchestral instruments in orchestras that pay at least 20k per year. There are 3000 new graduates per year with music performance degrees on orchestral instruments. So,not only are there 2850 with no spot to fill, there are probably around 10 or so years worth of 3000 graduates still in the hunt at any give time. The math don't look good...

BTW, while adding my $.02 about this post...

It is inappropriate to comment about someones playing because you don't agree with their views. His playing is not in question and cheap shots are uncalled for...

I agree completely. I don't see how it applies here, though. Are you saying you are automatically disqualified from commenting on the playing because you disagree with the views? How do you know if someone is making a comment because of the views or because they have a legitimate comment despite the disagreement?

I made a comment about the playing to the video (on the YouTube side, not here). It was musically appropriate and I stand by it. It was not well-received, but I couldn't care less...my opinion is my own and my right to express it is also mine to exercise. Was it colored by my disgust for the opinion expressed? Perhaps. Would I have made the same comment on a video of just the tuba playing? Absolutely. That being said, I definitely wouldn't have seen the video had it not been linked here and I probably wouldn't have been motivated to comment had it not been for the views expressed.

Agreed that cheap shots are never called for. But his playing is very much "in question" since he posted a link here to the video. It's the internet equivalent of "look at me." When you do that, you invite comment.

The offending post has been removed, so Doc's post above may not make much sense.
