So...has anyone (else) out there bought one of these?

I've had mine for a week now, and it's perfect for small on-the-go Web surfing (and TubeNet reading). I could even fit it (easily) in my gig bag, it's about the size of a DVD case. Anyone else have one?

I'm putting together a method of accessing my home ham radio setup via the Internet and an Eee would be a great way to access it. It's surprisingly easy and if there are any other hams here who are interested, PM me for details.

I know nothing about HAM radio, but if you need something ultraportable, consider the EEE. They sell it at (some) Best Buy stores now, so check it out. It looks like a fake toy compared to the other "portable" laptops out there.

There is a Best Buy near me so I might see if it is carried there.bort wrote:I know nothing about HAM radio, but if you need something ultraportable, consider the EEE. I found out about them when I was researching telephones that also had web access- things like the Apple iPhone and, uh, some other one. They seemed awful expensive for what they are and you also need a cellphone account. And the Eee is just a little larger. I have web-based e-mail access from my ISP so I can do that. With a web-based free e-mail account and free Wi-Fi in many, many places, a $350 +/- Eee would be a great way to be on what I call MoochNet and, if you lose it, have it stolen or drop it down a stairway, you're not out too much. You'll cry but not for long.
Ham radio is amateur radio, BTW.

Re: EEE PC
Check it out, you might be surprised by it. Two things I'd recommend -- budget in $20-$30 for some new RAM...it only comes with 512 MB, and it gets a little choked up. Check ebay for some good deals, I got 2 GB for $35. Also, the internal drive is small, but there is an SD card slot, so set aside a few dollars for a big HD card. All in all, you could probably do pretty well for both for under $60.
PM if you want more info, I've learned a lot about how to tweak this thing in only a few days with it...

Yes, I've had mine for a few months now. Running a lite version of Windows XP on it with no problems.
