Serpent. Not enough serpent players to go around. Chicks really dig hard rock serpent players too .

Basoon. That is if I could find a way to afford one. I sat behind a Heckle section last month realizing that there were $100,000 worth of Bassoons in those three chairs. Least amount of volume for the buck, but I love the sound. However, it is a kick knowing that with a $2000 Bass Trombone I can completely obliterate all those greenbacks, and all the high dollar strings as well. Maybe I'd better just dance with what brung me. Chainsaw forever!
I am fortunate to have a great job that feeds my family well, but music feeds my soul.

I would have learned piano. Girls love piano (although not as much as serpent, even though that may have been a euphemism.)

Piano or Violin from the aspect that these instruments can always make money.
I played a good bit of trombone in High School and sometimes wish that had been my primary instrument.

I am living this very scenerio. Dystonia ended my Horn playing career, and I've chosen Tuba to start all over with.

My first wind choice would be Horn. I was fortunate enough to go to the International Horn Symposium in 1997 hosted by Eastman School of Music. I played 8th part in a massive horn choir! Really cool.
After adding string orchestra to my teaching resume, my first choice string instrument would be cello.

Viola, since it gets so much more respect than tuba.
Actually, oboe. I just like the sound (plus the teeny cases and the fact that it takes so little air).

I wouldn't be a musician at all, I'd be a Music Director...
(then I wouldn't even have to learn the music!)

Re: What instrument would you choose if you had to start over?
I've had the priveledge of playing a hell of a lot of instruments, most for money.
But if I had it to do again, I wouldn't have let peer preasure push me off of flute. I still have three (one old style) and play for my own enjoyment. But my time investment was cut a lot by the abuse I suffered from peers for playing flute. I switched to "baritone" because I begged the band director for "anything else". The rest is history...
Rampal is still my idol, though.

Re: What instrument would you choose if you had to start over?
In all seriousness, I would pick the tuba again...but I would have started playing it much earlier than I did.
However, since the elephant already said your current instrument was not an option...I would have picked percussion. I dig the competitive drumline-only, DCI-based stuff going on right now. Looks like a lot of fun!

What I really wanted to play when I started in band in 1974, french horn. "You don't pick tuba, it picks you."

Bass trombone, for sure. I think I'd always have to play something "noticeable," rather than be a section instrument like a violin.

Re: What instrument would you choose if you had to start over?
Actually I would have done one of 2 things.
1) I would have played the French Horn...great sound.
2) I would have started on the tuba in 6th grade and took lessons immediately.
